WhatS That! Ultimate Guide To Wakeboarding Invert Tricks
Inverts are not necessarily the most difficult wakeboarding tricks to do – but they certainly look the most impressive! They are definitely intermediate level tricks, requiring quite a bit of confidence on the wakeboard before you attempt them … being upside down with a heavy wakeboard above you is not a beginner's position! Today we check out how to identify some of the common invert tricks on a wakeboard, and the techniques for getting your own legs above your head … and back down in one piece.
What is an invert?
Inverts are easy to recognize … you'll see the wakeboarder's head swap position with his knees, Wakeboarding is a sort characterized by inverts, unlike most other board sports, and until you've mastered some basic inverts, you have a long way to go.
How to get air for inverts
One thing that stymies many beginner wakeboarder trying to get air is the notion of ‘jumping'. When you get air on a wakeboard, you are using the wake as a jump, but you do not actually jump. There is no need to push with your legs – you simply need to have a high enough speed and rope tension so that when you cut over the wake, you naturally lift up into the air. The technique is:
* Start ten or fifteen feet out from the wake
* Cut towards the wake progressively
* Shift your weight back towards your heels
* When you get close to the wake, cut hard towards it
* Stand up tall as you go over, but don't push down with your legs
If you can't get air, watch that you aren't:
* Cutting towards the wake too hard at the beginning, creating a slack rope
* Standing up too soon before you reach the wake
* Cutting too little at the end before your jump
How to do a tantrum
Though there is some debate about the easiest invert trick to first learn, many experts think a tantrum is the best invert for beginners. Tantrums are basically backflips – your feet initiate the rotation, rather than your head. You can do a tantrum by:
* Making sure you have a strong wake-to-wake jump
* Cut hard towards the wake
* Let up on your edge as you approach the wake
* When you get to the top of the wake, twist so that your shoulders are parallel to the wake and arch your back
* Your feet should come up and rotate around you
Remember that there is no need to push into the wake – if you set up correctly, the wake will do all the work for you.
Common invert tricks
Wakeboarding invert tricks are some of the easiest to recognise – the rider's arms and legs are right up in the air in a prominent position. Some of the common invert tricks you'll see at competitions are:
* Tantrums: Like a wakeboarding backflip
* Wrecking ball: A wrapped tantrum with a backside 360 rotation
* Heelside backroll: A cartwheel style invert where your head leads the rotation
* Toeside backroll: Another cartwheel style rotation, but starting with your back towards the boat
* Sepcial K: A toeside backroll with the handle held behind the back
* Roll to Revert: Backroll with a frontside 180 rotation
With the right wakeboard and enough board hours, inverts will start coming naturally to you. Do your visualization, commit … and then let out a big roar of triumph!

I just found out how to do the Toeside 540. Pretty intense. I just thought I would give a few points for you guys to learn it. Just make sure you have a good toeside 180 and 360 beforehand. Keep the rope tight, start about 10 to 15 feet away from the wake, and cut easily into the wake. Pull the rope near your back and then turn your head and shoulders in the direction of your rotation. You need to pass the rope hand to hand and then keep going for the 180. Hope you are successful and use these tips that I have took the time + effort to write. I will be back to answer questions, so just post a comment if you have any questions.
