Does connecting a bass guitar to a main board and mix at church make sense?
You're talking about going direct into the board, and it's done all of the time for bass guitar and keyboards.
If the mixer is near where you are playing (within 20 feet), you can use a regular guitar cable and plug into an unbalanced input on the mixer.
If the mixer is located further away from the stage (for example, at the back of the hall), then you'll need a direct box. DI's have a transformer in them that converts the unbalanced high impedance signal from your instrument to a balanced low impedance XLR connection that can then be run over a very long distance with a lot of signal degredation.
Behringer makes good DI boxes for around $40. No bass player that's playing out live should be without one.
It then comes down to monitoring yourself. Will you be able to hear yourself clearly in the PA? If not, you may still want to use a small amp onstage turned up just loud enough for you to hear yourself. Then, let the soundman fill the room with your bass through the main PA. A DI box will let you send a signal directly to the board, and still go to your amp.
