Samsung 40" Model: LN40B530P7FXZA vs. Sony Bravia 40" Model: KDL-40S5100?
Both same price. They are both 1080p 60hz. I have been reading that Sony has an auto dimming effect that can cause problems. Is this true? I also play XBox 360 a lot so which is better for that?

I'm watching baseball on the LN40B530 as I write this, and am blown away by the crisp picture and wonderful colors. The sound is fine as far as my family is concerned. I did make some adjustments to the equalizer, which improved how it sounded right out of the box. I walked past the "tv wall" at a local Best Buy, and to me this TV looked as good as the ones in the $2,000-and-up range. As far as its being "only" 60hz, it looked better than some of the 120hz ones. Maybe if you're a heavy gamer that's an important consideration, but nobody here is. Our previous TV was a Hitachi plasma EDTV that we thought was great, but this is a big improvement. Can't wait to see a blue-ray disc on it. I wonder if the previous reviewer had a defective one. None of their complaints are true of this unit at all.

This is a great TV. I purchased this television from amazon, and was happy with it until I noticed the auto-dimming feature. After reading about it online, I've noticed tons of people having the same issue. Fortunately it can be fixed (relatively) easily. All you need is a compatible flash drive (you can check the Sony Support website for a list of compatible flash drives - I used 4 GB Sony Micro Vault), and a PC. From there you simply go to the Sony Support website and download the update/patch for the TV which completely eliminates the auto-dim feature. I got the link by accessing the chat service on the Sony Support site. The PC part is important; If you have an Apple computer, you won't be able to successfully install the update. I implore anyone who has issues with the auto-dim feature to download the update - it gets rid of the problem.
Pros: Great value; contrast ratio; 1080p; 40 inch screen.
Cons: Without the update/patch there is the auto-dim feature; only 60hz
Overall: I loved the TV at first, then hated it when I noticed the auto-dim, now love it again now that I downloaded the update. I would recommend this TV for anyone looking to upgrade to HD.
