Which Lcd Hdtv should i go for?
I watch a lot of movies (1080i through cable tv) and lots of sd programing at 480p all from cable. need advice for a 50" hdtv
There are three im considering:
1. Sony Bravia KDL-50W4100
2. Samsung LN52-A650
3. Samsung LN52-A550
i don't know which one to go for, i know that the sony has 8bit colour compare to samsungs who have 10bit processing. also i heard the sony has soft picture quality and bad black levels. the A550 lacks 120hz (but i don't watch much sports, mainly movies). A650 is red and has lots of reflection but other than that i havent heard anything bad about the samsung a650. so which one should i go for? btw money is not an issue here i can afford any of them, i want the best quality one.

Alright so let’s just say the Samsung 9 Series looks like its really the best deal…
Sony XBR 8 40″ is going for = $5,000 !

Sony has announced a new size for the XBR 7 & introduced a new model as well, ZX.
The NEW 52″ XBR 7 will sport the 240 Hz and regular CCFL backlighting & the NEW ZX model will be 9.9mm thin and have LED Backlighting with 120 Hz.
Sony 240 Hz announced! & Thinnest TV in World!
Sony announces the first 240 Hz sets due out this Nov 10th in Japan and December for the States. Many are wondering why 240Hz and how much better will this increase make? To put things into perspective the reason 120 Hz exist is to fix the problem with jutter that happens with 60 Hz.
The problem is that while 120Hz improves the issue it also creates some additional artifacts that makes the image look as if wasn’t real or also known as the Soap Opera effect. Either you love it or hate it. The problem is that it introduces some new issues that solves one problem but creates another. We have made some progress with the new 120Hz technology but Sony figures if they make a set with 240 Hz it will solve both problems and no create another. The original idea for 240 Hz was from Samsung but looks like Sony beat them to the punch as far as release date is concerned.
One thing to note is how the specific version that touts 240Hz will use the standard CCFL backlighting and NOT the LED backlighting. My main interest is if the 240Hz technology that is due in the US will be the XBR 6 or a while new like… XBR 9? Also the contrast of the 240 Hz sets is no different with this technology. In other words the 240Hz will hopefully just create a more realistic flow of fast motion. The picture quality will not change drastically by any means.
My bet is that the LED models will still look way better than the standard CCFL backlighting sets with 240Hz.
In this same announcement Sony says they are also making the thinnest television (Phillips just announced 8mm). This will be a new model as well and be 9.9mm thick. View picture below. The set will have nothing that special besides the fact that it is thin. This would equate to the Samsung 8 series. Good specs but not the flag ship. This is purely for looks and for those who want the TV set to be as flush as possible with the wall when mounted.
Samsung 9 Series Reviews so far
The highly highly anticipated new LED Backlight LCD from Samsung is finally trickling into users hands. Samsung has a lot to live up too and lots of competition coming out soon from Sony in the XBR 8.
Things we’ve heard so far:
Picture quality is AMAZING.
Black is BLACK!
Details in black are living up to expectations
Black is so black you don’t see the bars in widescreen images
Possibility of 8×8 = 64 smart zones for LED local dimming
Non swivel stand
No Halo affect like 81 series
Minor lose of detail is Smart LED Dimming is On
TBE (Tri Ball Effect) not visible on AMP modes of Low, Med and High
With all those things said it’s safe to say this could easily be one of the best television sets for years to come. Granted OLED & FED sets are on the way for the future, todays videophile looking for the best will have another option besides the Pioneer’s final Kuro Plasma model. As of today it is not available big box retailers but a handful of video phreaks finally got their fix. No major issues have come to light yet but this doesn’t mean their could be some future out breaks of issues.
One issues that has come to light in the discussion of the new set is the problem of LCD Lag. We are not talking about response time but actual video processing time. Lets get this straight once and for all for all you hardcore FPS fans and gamers. LCDs have display lag, this is no secret. A CRT televisions is still the best way to game in extremely fast games like Halo, Unreal Tournament, COD, etc… Their is not a major difference but in the extreme competitive cases yes a CRT can give an edge at the Pro level. This is not an issue with this specific TV but with all LCDs in general.
I think it’s safe to say Samsung has hit a home run with this set. The main question remains if the Sony XBR 8 will hit a grand slam with its Tri RGB LED technology versus the Samsung White LED technology.
Update: Ok some one concern people are having about the set is the viewing angle. Apparently if you sit in the center of the set it looks flawless but if you get at a decent angle you begin to lose picture quality.
