can i connect Philips 5.1 speakers which has sub woofer in to my Toshiba LCD t.v?

i have bought philips 5.1 multi speakers which says i can connect it to my Toshiba lcd. i have bought the 3.5 to rac adapters but i do not get any sound. So what am i doing wrong.
